A controller, which generates a control signal for controlling a printer on the basis of an input signal, is provided with: a quantizer unit which generates a control signal by quantizing an intermediate signal, which is generated by multiplying an input signal, with a first multiplier unit, by a correction gain for controlling the correction amount for correcting error in printing density and by subtracting, with a first arithmetic unit, an error diffusion output signal outputted from a diffusion matrix that determines the distribution of error in printing density; a second multiplier unit which multiplies the control signal by an adjustment gain determined on the basis of the correction gain; and a second arithmetic unit which, on the basis of the signal outputted from the second arithmetic unit, generates an error diffusion input signal inputted to the diffusion matrix.
