Title: FINELY DIVIDED, CATIONIC, AQUEOUS POLYMER DISPERSIONS, METHOD FOR THE PRODUCTION THEREOF, AND USE THEREOF
Abstract:
The invention concerns a finely divided, cationic, aqueous polymer dispersion which is obtainable by emulsion polymerisation of ethylenically unsaturated monomers in an aqueous solution of a cationic prepolymer as a dispersant, wherein the cationic prepolymer is prepared in the presence of polymerisation initiators by polymerisation of (a) from 15 to 30% by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer which has an amino group, (b) from 45 to 75% by weight of at least one optionally substituted styrene, (c) from 5 to 25% by weight of at least one C1- to C8- alkyl (meth) acrylate, (d) from 0.5 to 10% by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer comprising an acid group, and (e) from 0 to 20% by weight of at least one non-ionic, ethylenically unsaturated monomer differing from (b) and (c), the sum of (a) + (b) + (c) + (d) + (e) being 100% by weight, in a solution polymerisation in a partly to completely water miscible solvent, addition of water to the so formed prepolymer to form an aqueous solution of the prepolymer, and thereafter carrying out an emulsion polymerisation of a monomer mixture in the aqueous solution of the prepolymer, the monomer mixture comprising. (i) from 0 to 30% by weight of at least one optionally substituted styrene, (ii) from 50 to 100% by weight of at least one C1- to C18- alkyl (meth) acrylate, (iii) from 0 to 30% by weight of at least one vinyl ester of linear or branched C1- to C30- carboxylic acid, and (iv) from 0 to 30% by weight of at least one non-ionic ethylenically unsaturated monomer differing from (i), (ii) and (iii), the sum of (i) + (ii) + (iii) + (iv) being 100% by weight, and the solution polymerisation and/or emulsion polymerisation is optionally carried out in the presence of from 0 to 5% by weight of at least one polymerisation regulator. The invention also relates to a process for preparing the polymer dispersion and the use of the polymer dispersion as a sizing agent for the sizing of paper, board and cardboard.
