The invention relates to a light modulation element comprising, preferably consisting of a cholesteric liquid crystalline medium sandwiched between two opposing substrates, an electrode arrangement, which is capable to allow the application of an electric field, which is substantially perpendicular to the main plane of substrate or the layer of the cholesteric liquid- crystalline medium, characterized in that one of the substrates is provided with a processed alignment layer adjacent to the cholesteric liquid crystalline medium and the other substrate is either provided with an unprocessed alignment layer adjacent to the cholesteric liquid crystalline medium or is not provided with an alignment layer. The invention is further related to a method of production of said light modulation element and to the use of said light modulation element in various types of optical and electro-optical devices, such as electro-optical displays, liquid crystal displays (LCDs), non-linear optic (NLO) devices, and optical information storage devices.

La présente invention concerne un élément de modulation de lumière comprenant, de préférence constitué d’un milieu de cristaux liquides cholestériques intercalé entre deux substrats opposés, un agencement d'électrodes, qui peut permettre l'application d'un champ électrique, qui est sensiblement perpendiculaire au plan principal du substrat ou à la couche de milieu de cristaux liquides cholestériques, caractérisé en ce que l'un des substrats est pourvu d'une couche d'alignement traitée adjacente au milieu de cristaux liquides cholestériques et l'autre substrat est pourvu d'une couche d'alignement non traitée adjacente au milieu de cristaux liquides cholestériques ou n'est pas pourvu d'une couche d'alignement. L’invention concerne en outre un procédé de production dudit élément de modulation de lumière et l'utilisation dudit élément de modulation de lumière dans différents types de dispositifs optiques et électro-optiques, tels que des affichages électro-optiques, des affichages à cristaux liquides (LCD), des dispositifs optiques non linéaires (NLO) et des dispositifs de stockage d'informations optiques.
