The NOx purification rate P of a group of selective reduction catalyst devices is calculated on the basis of the upstream NOx concentration Nud, i.e. the NOx concentration in exhaust gas G passing through an exhaust passage 11 upstream of a urea water supply device 22, the downstream NOx concentration Ndd, i.e. the NOx concentration in exhaust gas Gc passing through the exhaust passage 11 downstream of the group of selective reduction catalyst devices, and the ammonia concentration Sd in the exhaust gas Gc passing through the exhaust passage 11 downstream of the group of selective reduction catalyst devices. The presence of a failure in the group of selective reduction catalyst devices is determined on the basis of the calculated NOx purification rate P.

Selon l'invention, le taux de purification de NOx (P) d'un groupe de dispositifs catalyseurs de réduction sélective est calculé en fonction de la concentration de NOx en amont (Nud), c'est-à-dire la concentration de NOx dans le gaz d'échappement (G) traversant un passage d'échappement (11) en amont d'un dispositif d'alimentation en eau d'urée (22), de la concentration de NOx en aval (Ndd), c'est-à-dire la concentration de NOx dans le gaz d'échappement (Gc) traversant le passage d'échappement (11) en aval du groupe de dispositifs catalyseurs de réduction sélective, et de la concentration d'ammoniac (Sd) dans le gaz d'échappement (Gc) traversant le passage d'échappement (11) en aval du groupe de dispositifs catalyseurs de réduction sélective. La présence d'une défaillance dans le groupe de dispositifs catalyseurs de réduction sélective est déterminée en fonction du taux de purification de NOx (P) calculé.
