A fuel cell system including a hydrocarbon fuel stream including a sulfur compound; a passive sorbent bed including a selective sulfur sorbent configured to remove the sulfur compound from the hydrocarbon fuel stream; SCSO reactor, and an active sorbent bed comprising a sulfur oxide sorbent, wherein the active sorbet bed is configured to receive an effluent stream from the SCSO reactor and remove at least a portion of the sulfur oxides via the sulfur oxide sorbent. During start-up of the fuel cell system, the hydrocarbon fuel stream may be directed along a first flow pathway through the passive sorbent bed to remove the sulfur compound from the fuel stream during a first time period and then directed along a second flow pathway during a second time period that does not pass through the passive sorbent bed, e.g., once the SCSO reactor/active sorbent bed have reached operating temperature.

La présente invention concerne un système de pile à combustible comprenant un flux de combustible hydrocarbure comprenant un composé soufré ; un lit de sorbant passif comprenant un sorbant de soufre sélectif configuré pour éliminer le composé soufré du flux de combustible hydrocarbure ; un réacteur SCSO, et un lit de sorbant actif comprenant un sorbant d'oxyde de soufre, le lit de sorption actif étant configuré pour recevoir un flux d'effluent provenant du réacteur SCSO et éliminer au moins une partie des oxydes de soufre par l'intermédiaire du sorbant d'oxyde de soufre. Pendant le démarrage du système de pile à combustible, le flux de combustible hydrocarbure peut être dirigé le long d'une première voie d'écoulement à travers le lit de sorbant passif pour éliminer le composé soufré du flux de combustible pendant une première période, et ensuite dirigé le long d'une deuxième voie d'écoulement pendant une deuxième période qui ne traverse pas le lit de sorbant passif, par exemple, une fois que les réacteur SCSO/lit de sorbant actif ont atteint la température de fonctionnement.
