Provided are: a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery having excellent high-temperature storage characteristics; and a method for manufacturing this nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery. A nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery according to the present invention is provided with: a negative electrode which contains an Li-Al alloy in the surface; a positive electrode; a separator; and a nonaqueous electrolyte solution. This nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery is characterized in that: the positive electrode contains, as a positive electrode active material, a manganese-containing oxide; the manganese-containing oxide contains Li; the molar ratio of Li to Mn contained in the manganese-containing oxide, namely Li/Mn is from 0.2 to 0.5 (inclusive); the manganese-containing oxide has a diffraction peak around a diffraction angle 2θ of 29° and a diffraction peak around a diffraction angle 2θ of 37° in an X-ray diffraction pattern obtained using a Cu-Kα ray; the ratio of the peak intensity I29 of the diffraction peak around 29° to the peak intensity I37 of the diffraction peak around 37°, namely I29/I37 is 0.3 or more; the Li content in the total mass of Li and Al in the negative electrode is 1-20% by mass; and the nonaqueous electrolyte solution contains an unsaturated cyclic sultone compound.
