A light-emitting device 1 according to the present invention comprises a substrate 30 and a phosphor layer 40 wherein many phosphor particles 60 are adhered to a flat surface 32 of the substrate 30. At least one of the phosphor particles 60 is a monodispersed phosphor particle 65 having a polyhedral shape which is derived from the structure of a garnet crystal and contains facets. A median grain diameter D50 of the polyhedral phosphor particle 65 is greater than or equal to 30 μm and smaller than or equal to the maximum thickness of the phosphor layer 40. At least one of the phosphor particles 60 adhered to the flat surface 32 of the substrate 30 is preferably the monodispersed, phosphor particle 65 having the polyhedral shape which is derived from the structure of the garnet crystal and contains the facets.
