Abstract:
One aspect of the present invention provides a liquid crystal display device having a horizontal alignment mode in which higher definition is possible and response speed can be improved. The liquid crystal display device pertaining to an aspect of the present invention is provided with a first substrate, a liquid crystal layer containing liquid crystal molecules, and a second substrate in the stated order. The first substrate has a first electrode, a second electrode provided further to the liquid crystal layer side than the first electrode, and an insulating film between the first electrode and the second electrode. An opening that includes a elongate-shaped part and a pair of projecting parts projecting from the elongate-shaped part to mutually opposite sides is formed on the second electrode. The pair of projecting parts are provided to the portion excluding both end parts of the elongate-shaped part in the lengthwise direction, and are positioned in mutually corresponding locations. In a voltage non-applied state, the liquid crystal molecules are aligned parallel to the first substrate, and in plan view, the lengthwise direction of the elongate-shaped part and the alignment direction of the liquid crystal molecules in the voltage non-applied state are parallel or orthogonal.
