Abstract:
Provided are a cell observation device and method whereby the three-dimensional structure of an entire cell can be observed and unnecessary imaging can be prevented. The present invention is provided with an image-forming optical system 30 for forming an image of a cell, an image-forming optical system control unit 51 for controlling a scanning range of focal positions of the image-forming optical system 30, a thickness information acquiring unit 53 for acquiring information relating to the thickness of a cell, and an imaging unit 40 for capturing an image formed by the image-forming optical system 30, the image-forming optical system control unit 51 setting an initial scanning range of focal positions on the basis of the information relating to thickness, causing an image of a cell to be formed at each of a plurality of focal positions in the initial scanning range, and then acquiring the images captured for each of the plurality of focal positions by the imaging unit 40, estimating the thickness of the cell on the basis of the images, updating the initial scanning range of focal positions on the basis of the estimated thickness of the cell, and causing an image of the cell to be formed at each of the plurality of focal positions in the updated scanning range.
