Abstract:
An embedded system comprising a microcontroller, a non-volatile memory NVM accessible to the microcontroller and a firmware constructed to control the microcontroller; the non-volatile memory having a plurality of memory cells, each memory cell being constructed to be able to take at least two or exactly two different logical levels (202, 205), so as to represent different memory contents of the memory cell; the non-volatile memory being a multilevel memory, wherein some or all of the logical levels (202, 205) are assigned at least two physical write levels (201, 203; 204, 206), corresponding to the same logical level (202; 205); the microcontroller or the firmware further including a PUF generation logic constructed to generate a PUF based on a unique quantity of the microcontroller and to store a generated PUF to an internal memory of the non-volatile memory NVM that is accessible to the microcontroller; the PUF generation logic is further constructed to: - generate the PUF based on one or several of the physical write levels (201, 203, 204, 206) of one or several cells of the non-volatile memory as the unique quantity of the microcontroller; and/ or - store, under control of the firmware, a generated PUF to the non-volatile memory based on physical write levels (201, 203, 204, 206) of the non-volatile memory.
