CLAIMS

1. A blood pump (1), comprising a pump section (2) and a flow cannula (3), the pump section (1) having a blood flow inlet (1 1) and a blood flow outlet (12) and an impeller for conveying blood from the blood flow inlet (1 1 ) to the blood flow outlet (13), and the flow cannula (3) having a general longitudinal axis (18) with a distal end portion (13) and a proximal end portion (14),

wherein the proximal end portion (14) of the flow cannula (3) is connected to the pump section (2) such that blood can enter the blood flow inlet (1 1), and the distal end portion (13) of the flow cannula (3) comprises an enlarged diameter portion (15) and at least one radial blood flow-through opening (16) for blood to enter the flow cannula (3), with at least a major portion of the at least one blood flow-through opening (16) being disposed in the enlarged diameter portion (15),

wherein the blood pump (1) further comprises a sleeve (4) having a proximal end (41) attached to the flow cannula (3) proximal to the blood flow-through opening (16), and a distal end (42) overlapping the enlarged diameter portion (15), the sleeve (4) having a structure that prevents the distal end (42) from bending radially inwards into the at least one blood flow-through opening by more than 0.2 mm during unobstructed operation of the blood pump (1) in a patient.

2. The blood pump of claim 1, wherein at least the distal end portion of the flow cannula is radially expandable from a compressed configuration to an expanded configuration.

3. The blood pump of claim 2, wherein the expanded configuration defines the enlarged diameter portion, while in the compressed configuration a diameter of the enlarged diameter portion is substantially equal to a diameter of a remainder of the flow cannula.

4. The blood pump of any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the distal end portion of the flow cannula comprises a frame structure that defines the blood flow-through opening.

5. The blood pump of claim 4, wherein the frame structure comprises a plurality of struts extending substantially in a direction of the flow cannula's longitudinal axis.

6. The blood pump of any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein at least the distal end portion of the flow cannula comprises a shape-memory alloy material, preferably Nitinol.

7. The blood pump of any one of claims 1 to 6, wherein the at least one blood flow-through opening is disposed on a radially circumferential surface of the distal end portion of the flow cannula.

8. The blood pump of any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein the sleeve comprises a membrane of a flexible material, preferably polyurethane.

9. The blood pump of any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein the distal end of the sleeve is disposed substantially at a largest diameter of the enlarged diameter portion, or wherein the distal end of the sleeve is disposed between the proximal end of the sleeve and the largest diameter of the enlarged diameter portion.

10. The blood pump of any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein the sleeve has a funnel shape so as to direct a blood flow into the blood flow-through openings of the flow cannula.

1 1. The blood pump of any one of claims 1 to 10, wherein the sleeve is disposed about a circumferential surface of the distal end portion of the flow cannula, or wherein the sleeve is disposed within an interior of the flow cannula.

12. The blood pump of any one of claims 1 to 11, wherein the sleeve is configured to radially expand or unfold, preferably as a result of the blood flow.

13. The blood pump of any one of claims 1 to 12, wherein at least one of the enlarged diameter portion of the flow cannula and the sleeve comprises an expansion mechanism allowing said portion or sleeve to expand or unfold and to compress or collapse.

14. The blood pump of claim 13, wherein the expansion mechanism comprises at least one of at least one hinge, at least one magnet, a shape-memory alloy or bimetal.

15. The blood pump of any one of claims 1 to 14, wherein the sleeve comprises a guiding structure at an inner surface of the sleeve for directing the blood flow in a

longitudinal direction, the guiding structure preferably comprising a plurality of stator blades.

16. The blood pump of any one of claims 1 to 15, wherein the sleeve's structure comprises a reinforcement structure that has increased stiffness in a radial direction to provide a convex cross-sectional area of the sleeve at least in a region where the reinforcement structure is disposed in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis.

17. The blood pump of claim 16, wherein the reinforcement structure is disposed at least in or adjacent to the distal end of the sleeve.

18. The blood pump of claim 16 or 17, wherein the reinforcement structure is radially expandable from a compressed configuration to an expanded configuration.

19. The blood pump of any one of claims 1 to 18, wherein the sleeve's structure comprises at least one inflatable structure that extends at least partially circumferentially about the sleeve.

20. The blood pump of any one of claims 1 to 21, wherein the sleeve's structure comprises at least one annular balloon.

21. The blood pump of any one of claims 1 to 22, wherein the sleeve's structure comprises at least one resilient member that extends at least partially circumferentially about the sleeve.

22. The blood pump of any one of claims 1 to 21, wherein the sleeve's structure comprises at least one band or wire extending at least partially circumferentially about the sleeve and comprising at least one of a shape-memory alloy, a metal and polymer material.

23. The blood pump of any one of claims 1 to 22, wherein the sleeve's structure comprises at least one telescoping member that extends at least partially circumferentially about the sleeve.

24. The blood pump of any one of claims 1 to 23, wherein at least two sleeves are disposed in series on the distal end portion of the flow cannula such that blood can enter each of the sleeves towards the blood flow-through openings.

25. The blood pump of any one of claims 1 to 24, wherein the blood pump is an intravascular blood pump.

26. The blood pump of any one of claims 1 to 25, wherein the blood pump is an blood pump, a centrifugal blood pump or a mixed-type blood pump.
