Title (EN) ZERO BALLAST SYSTEM: PNEUMATIC, ELECTRO-MAGNETIC, BUOYANCY
(FR) SYSTÈME ZÉRO BALLAST : FLOTTABILITÉ PNEUMATIQUE, ÉLECTROMAGNÉTIQUE
Abstract:
(EN) To comply with IMO's Ballast Water Convention and US Regulations, there are various Ballast Water Treatment Systems approved by IMO, USCG and under R&D for retrofitting on existing tonnage and new-builds. There are Hull Designs being researched and adopted to enable ships to sail without ballast in loaded and unladed conditions but are suitable only for new constructions and existing tonnage cannot benefit from it. The Zero Ballast Systems contained herein can be retrofitted on existing vessels for placement on deck, inside void spaces, inside the ballast tanks or as in the case of Buoyancy System fitted around the ship's hull or on the flat bottom. If adopted and fitted on new ships the double hull norms can be followed while reducing the size of the tanks nominated previously for holding ballast water, thereby increasing the cargo carrying capacity of the ship for the same shape and external dimensions. It must be noted that for the Pneumatic or Electromagnetic systems, in case of complete failure of compressed air or electrical system, specifically in loaded condition, the safety aspects can work only when the system is installed on deck. For ease of understanding, the drawings show the external placement only. The number of units to be fitted on each ship and the weight of each unit shall depend upon the required equivalent ballast mass for submerging the vessel to the designed safe draft for sailing without cargo, i.e. in 'Ballast Condition'. The electro-magnetic unit is not suitable for fitting on tankers, gas carriers or vessels designated to carry volatile, flammable or hazardous cargoes. Only pneumatic system is recommended for such ships. The systems can be fitted independently or to improve the fail safe potential, the ship owner or ship yard may decide to fit both, the pneumatic and Electro-Magnetic systems in tandem to supply pneumatic and electromagnetic power to lift the weights and keep them afloat, even though this may not be financially practical. Fitment of the offered equipment shall change the LDT of the ship, increasing the nett weight and scrap value at time of re-cycling the ship. For the Buoyancy System, the buoyancy tanks shall be fitted on the outside of the ship. The design requires inflation and deflation of rubber bladders along the hull as required to increase or decrease the buoyancy of the ship. Materials used must be fully compliant with Green Passport Requirements. All the mentioned systems have to be operated only during loaded passages.
