Abstract:
A method of producing an optical fiber is provided that includes the steps of flowing a first gas into an optical fiber draw furnace (10). The first gas G1 is passed through a heated section (18) configured to contain and heat a glass source or optical fiber preform (30) from which the optical fiber (34) is drawn, passing the first gas G1 through a muffle (22) which defines a capture chamber (46). A portion of the first gas G1 is removed through at least one reclaim port (50) operatively coupled to the capture chamber (46). A second gas G2 flows into a gas screen (26) at a rate configured to substantially recover a pressure drop associated with removing the portion of the first gas G1.
