Abstract:
The purpose of the present invention is to improve the initial response of water absorption and re-swelling, i.e., a water absorption rate and an instantaneous water absorption rate, in a biodegradable water absorbent that can be used as a constituent of an absorbent material for an absorbent article such as a disposable diaper and a sanitary napkin. An absorbent article contains a particulate water absorbent, which is composed of a crosslinked naturally occurring polymer and trehalose, as a constituent of an absorbent material, wherein the water absorption rate of the water absorbent is 25 seconds or less as measured by a vortex method. The water absorbent can be produced by: adding a crosslinking agent to an aqueous raw material solution prepared by dissolving a naturally occurring polymer and trehalose in water, or irradiating the aqueous raw material solution with a radioactive ray to cause the naturally occurring polymer to be crosslinked, or allowing an aqueous trehalose solution to be absorbed in a crosslinked naturally occurring polymer; and subjecting the resultant product to wet-mode milling, and then dehydrating and drying the milled product.
