Title: METHOD OF TREATING MATERIALS USING MULTIBEAM LASER SCANNING
Abstract:
A method of treating materials using multibeam laser scanning, characterized in that the field undergoing treatment is divided into sectors in the shape of equilateral triangles, squares or rectangles. Laser scanning head outlet ports are positioned above the vertices of said sectors at a height determined by the formula hd/tgα, where d is the length of a side of a triangular sector or of the diagonal of a square or rectangular sector, and α is the maximum scanning angle. At each treatment stage, determined by a computer programme, the amount of non-treated material is assessed in each sector and beams are directed to the sectors having the largest amount of non-treated material. Between the scanning heads and the field undergoing treatment there are mounted sensors which enable the calculation of corrections to compensate for scanning head alignment errors. The result is a more uniform utilization of a large number of laser beams, making it possible to vastly increase the productivity of an apparatus that permits the manufacture of large items or the simultaneous manufacture of a large number of items on a single apparatus.
