Abstract:
In the present invention, a parameter correlated to the degree of mixing between fuel spray and intake air at the autoignition start position in a combustion chamber is defined as a spray characteristic value. The spray characteristic value is, for example, the distance between the distal end of the fuel spray and an injection hole of a fuel injection valve at a time when an ignition delay period has elapsed after the start of injection by the fuel injection valve. A control device sets a target value of the spray characteristic value on the basis of the operating condition of the engine. The control device sets a startup injection rate to be used at the start of injection by the fuel injection valve in order for the actual spray characteristic value to reach the target value, and performs injection control whereby the injection rate of the fuel injection valve is gradually increased from the startup injection rate.
