Abstract:
(EN) An all-iron redox flow battery is proposed and developed for end-users without access to an electricity grid. The concept is a low-cost battery which the user assembles, discharges, and then disposes of the active materials. The design goals are: (1) minimize upfront cost, (2) maximize discharge energy, and (3) utilize non-toxic and environmentally benign materials. These are different goals than typically considered for electrochemical battery technology, which provides the opportunity for a novel solution. The selected materials are: low carbon steel negative electrode, paper separator, porous carbon paper positive electrode, and electrolyte solution containing 0.5 M Fe2(S04)3 active material and 1.2 M NaCl supporting electrolyte. With these materials, an average power density around 20 mW cm-2 and a maximum energy density of 11.5 Wh L-1 are achieved. A simple cost model indicates the consumable materials cost $6.45 kWh-1, or only $0,034 per mobile phone charge.
(FR) L'invention concerne une batterie fer à flux redox mise au point pour des utilisateurs finaux, sans accès à un réseau électrique. Le concept est une batterie à faible coût que l'utilisateur assemble, décharge, et dont il jette ensuite les matériaux actifs. Les objectifs de cette conception sont de : (1) minimiser le coût initial, (2) maximiser l'énergie de décharge, et (3) utiliser des matériaux non toxiques et sans danger pour l'environnement. Ces objectifs sont différents de ceux généralement pris en compte dans la technologie des batteries électrochimiques, offrant ainsi la possibilité d'une nouvelle solution. Les matériaux sélectionnés sont : une électrode négative en acier à faible teneur en carbone, un séparateur en papier, une électrode positive en papier de carbone poreux et une solution électrolytique contenant 0,5 M de Fe2(SO4)3 en tant que matériau actif et 1,2 M de NaCl en tant qu'électrolyte de support. Avec ces matériaux, on obtient une densité d'énergie moyenne autour de 20 mW au cm-2 et une densité d'énergie maximale de 11,5 Wh L-1. Un simple modèle de coût indique le coût des matériaux consommables, 6,45 $ le kWh-1, ou seulement 0,034 $ la charge d'un téléphone mobile.
