An adapter(200) for a load cell(150) in a rod pump system(100) includes an outer shell(210) including a mounting portion configured to attach to the load cell(150) on a polished rod(110), a power supply(260) configured to provide power to the adapter(200) and the load cell(150), the power supply(260) including a solar panel(240) on the outer shell(210), a cable(202) configured to connect to the load cell(150), the adapter(200) configured to provide power to the load cell(150) via the cable(202), and the adapter(200) configured to receive a load signal from the load cell(150) via the cable(202), a signal processor(544) configured to receive and process the load signal and to output load signal data representative of a load experienced by the load cell(150), and a wireless transmitter(251,551) to transmit the load signal data.
