This optical device is provided with a light guide plate which guides light in a plane parallel to an emission surface, and with multiple light converging units each of which comprises: a deflecting optical surface which deflects, in the light guide direction of a light guide plate, the light incident to the light guide plate from a light source provided opposite to a surface that is parallel to the surface opposite of the emission surface and/or to the emission-side surface; and an optical surface to which light deflected by the deflecting optical surface and guided by the light guide plate is incident and which emits from the emission surface emission light in a direction that substantially converges said light onto one convergence point or convergence line in space or that substantially diverges said light from the one convergence point or convergence line in space. The multiple light converging units are formed in a plane parallel to the emission surface along predetermined lines; the convergence points or convergence lines are mutually different for the optical convergence units, and an image is formed in space by the aggregate of the multiple convergence points or convergence lines.
