Provided is an end surface-contact mechanical seal that is configured so as seal by means of the relative rotational sliding contact action of sealing end surfaces (5a, 6a) which are opposing end surfaces of a fixed sealing ring (6), which is fixed to a rotating shaft (4), and a movable sealing ring (5), which is held by a seal case (3) so as to be movable in an axial direction, said mechanical seal being provided with a flushing means (8) that discharges a flushing liquid (F) from a flushing passage (81) formed in the seal case (3) toward relative rotational sliding contact portions (5a, 6a) of the sealing rings (5, 6), wherein coating layers (9a, 10a) and (9b, 10b), which comprise a material having a higher thermal conductivity coefficient and hardness than a constituent material of the sealing rings (5, 6), are formed in a series on the surfaces of the sealing rings (5, 6) on portions with which the flushing liquid (F) makes contact and on the sealing end surfaces (5a, 5b), and the relative rotational sliding contact portions (5a, 6a) of the sealing rings (5, 6) are configured to be uniformly and sufficiently cooled by the flushing liquid (F) over the entire perimeter of said portions.

 回転軸(4)に固定された固定密封環(6)とシールケース(3)に軸線方向移動可能に保持された可動密封環(5)との対向端面である密封端面(5a,6a)の相対回転摺接作用によりシールするように構成すると共に、シールケース(3)に形成したフラッシング通路(81)から両密封環(5,6)の相対回転摺接部分(5a,6a)に向けてフラッシング液(F)を噴出させるフラッシング手段(8)を設けてある端面接触形メカニカルシールにおいて、各密封環(5,6)の表面であってフラッシング液(F)が接触する部分及び密封端面(5a,5b)に、当該密封環(5,6)の構成材に比して熱伝導係数及び硬度が大きい材料からなるコーティング層(9a,10a)及び(9b,10b)を一連に形成し、フラッシング液(F)により両密封環(5,6)の相対回転摺接部分(5a,6a)をその全周に亘って均一且つ十分に冷却させるようにする。
