Title: INTEGRATED OPTICAL COUPLER HAVING POLARIZATION SEPARATION/SYNTHESIS FUNCTION
Abstract:
[Problem] To provide a compact integrated optical coupler having a polarization separation function of connecting a normal optical fiber and a small-diameter waveguide with low loss. [Solution] The present invention is an integrated optical coupler having one or more symmetric MZIs each formed in an optical planar circuit and provided with a 1×2 connection part. A connection part between a main body and a two-port side of the MZI is a waveguide having a relative refractive index difference of 0.8-10% inclusive, and a connection part on a one-port side of the MZI is a waveguide designed to match a standard single mode optical fiber (SMF) beam diameter. The integrated optical coupler has a groove having a width of 20 microns or less and is disposed so as to intersect two interference arms that form the MZI, and a quarter-wavelength plate produced from photonic crystal and having slow axes (or fast axes) orthogonal to each other is inserted in the groove over the respective optical paths of the two interference arms. The quarter-wavelength plate is a single piece over the entire MZI.
