A process for producing PHA comprises obtaining biomass produced in the course of biologically treating a first wastewater source containing RBCOD. The biomass is to be exploited with a second wastewater source having a different RBCOD content from the first wastewater source in order to accumulate and thereby produce PHA. Before subjecting the biomass to a PHA accumulation process, the biomass PHA accumulation potential is enhanced via an acclimation process with the second wastewater source. During acclimation, the biomass is subjected to repeated feast-famine periods. During each feast period, the biomass is exposed to a fraction of the second wastewater source. The RBCOD uptake and/or biomass respiration rate is directly or indirectly measured during each feast period. The famine period is maintained for a period of time that is at least two times greater than the length of time of the proceeding feast period. After at least two feast-famine acclimation periods or after one or more measured parameters reveal an increased RBCOD relative uptake or respiration rate of the biomass during a subsequent feast period, the biomass is subjected to a PHA accumulation process using the second wastewater source.

L'invention concerne un procédé pour produire des PHA comprenant l'obtention d'une biomasse produite au cours du traitement biologique d'une première source d'eaux usées contenant du RBCOD. La biomasse doit être exploitée avec une seconde source d'eaux usées ayant une teneur en RBCOD différente de la première source d'eaux usées de façon à accumuler et, de ce fait, produire des PHA. Avant de soumettre la biomasse à un processus d'accumulation de PHA, le potentiel d'accumulation de PHA de la biomasse est amélioré par l'intermédiaire d'un processus d'acclimatation avec la seconde source d'eaux usées. Pendant une acclimatation, la biomasse est soumise à des périodes répétées d'abondance-restriction. Pendant chaque période d'abondance, la biomasse est exposée à une fraction de la seconde source d'eaux usées. L'absorption de RBCOD et/ou le rythme respiratoire de la biomasse sont/est directement ou indirectement mesuré(e)(s) pendant chaque période d'abondance. La période de restriction est maintenue pendant une période de temps qui est au moins deux fois supérieure à la longueur de temps de la période de la procédure d'abondance. Après au moins deux périodes d'acclimatation abondance-restriction ou après qu'un ou plusieurs paramètres mesurés révèlent une absorption relative de RBCOD ou un rythme respiratoire plus grand(e) de la biomasse au cours d'une autre période d'abondance, la biomasse est soumise à un processus d'accumulation de PHA à l'aide de la seconde source d'eaux usées.
