A circuit for controlling a Switched Reluctance Motor (SRM) includes a plurality transformer-based gate drive control units, each of which includes (a) a set of inputs electrically couplable to an output of a microcontroller (MC) or a Digital Signal Processor (DSP); (b) a power input couplable to a single power supply that provides an identical peak voltage signal to the transformer-based gate drive unit and the MC / DSP; and (c) an output electrically couplable to a gate of a power transistor of an SRM power converter circuit. Each transformer-coupled gate drive unit is configured for stepping-up the peak voltage signal provided by the single power supply to a higher voltage signal suitable for driving a gate of a power transistor of the transformer-coupled gate drive unit. The power transistor of each transformer-coupled gate drive unit is coupled to a corresponding power transistor gate of the SRM power converter.
