Abstract:
Provided is a PTC element which resolves the problem of increase in surface resistance in forming a base metal-based electrode on a BaTiO3-based semiconductor ceramic composition using baking. The present invention is a PTC element in which a base metal-based electrode having, as a main component, Al and/or Ni is formed on a semiconductor ceramic composition using baking, said PTC element characterized in that: the semiconductor ceramic composition has a perovskite structure comprising BaTiO3-type oxide; the base metal-based electrode is provided with a first electrode layer, which is a first layer, in contact with the semiconductor ceramic composition, and a second electrode layer, which is a second layer, covering the first electrode layer; the proportion of the sum of Al and Ni included in the first electrode layer, when the total of Al, Ni, B, and Si is treated as 100% by weight, is greater than or equal to 50% by weight and less than 95% by weight, and the first electrode layer includes B and/or Si; and the proportion of Al included in the second electrode layer, when the total of Al, Ni, B, and Si is treated as 100% by weight, is greater than or equal to 90% by weight, and the proportion of Al included in the second electrode layer is greater than the proportion of the sum of Al and Ni included in the first electrode layer.
