Abstract:
The present invention relates to a compression-ignition, direct injection internal combustion engine comprising at least one cylinder (10), a cylinder head (12) carrying fuel injection means (14), a piston (16) which slides in the cylinder, a combustion chamber (34) defined on one side by the upper surface (44) of the piston, which comprises a nipple (48) which rises towards the cylinder head and is arranged at the centre of a concave bowl (46), said engine comprising injection means which inject fuel in at least two layers of fuel jets having different layer angles (A1, A2), a lower layer (36) having a jet axis C1 and an upper layer (38) having a jet axis C2 and at least two mixing regions (Z1, Z2) in the combustion chamber. According to the invention, one of the regions comprises a toroidal space (64) having a centre B and a flat bottom (56), in which the fuel jets (40) of the lower layer are injected such that the jet axis C1 of the jets of the lower layer is positioned between the centre B and the nipple (48).
