A bi-directional clutch (10) is provided having inner (22) and outer (24) members disposed about a rotational axis (36). One or more pawls (28) are coupled to one of the members (22, 24) and configured for rotation about separate rotational axes (66). One end of each pawl (28) moves between first and second engagement positions with corresponding engagement surfaces (62, 64) formed in the other member and a position of disengagement with the other member permitting relative rotation of the inner (22) and outer (24) members. A pair of magnets (30A, 30B) are disposed at the opposite end of each pawl (28) with each magnet (30A, 30B) in the pair defining a pole adjacent the end of the pawl (28) and the poles having opposite polarity. An electromagnetic actuator (32) selectively generates electromagnetic fields of different polarities to urge the pawls (28) away from the position of disengagement to one of the engagement positions to cause rotation of the other member (22, 24) in either rotational direction.

Cette invention concerne un embrayage bidirectionnel comprenant des éléments intérieur et extérieur disposés sur un axe de rotation. Un ou plusieurs cliquet(s) est/sont accouplé(s) à un des éléments et conçu(s) pour tourner sur des axes de rotation distincts. Une extrémité de chaque cliquet se déplace entre une première et une seconde position de contact avec des surfaces de contact correspondantes formées dans l'autre élément et une position de désaccouplement avec l'autre élément permettant la rotation relative des éléments intérieur et extérieur. Une paire d'aimants est disposée à l'extrémité opposée de chaque cliquet, chaque aimant de la paire définissant un pôle de manière adjacente à l'extrémité du cliquet et les pôles présentant une polarité opposée. Un actionneur électromagnétique génère sélectivement des champs électromagnétiques de polarités différentes pour solliciter les cliquets hors de la position de désaccouplement vers une des positions de contact afin de provoquer la rotation de l'autre élément dans chaque sens de rotation.
