Abstract:
(EN) The invention exploits a widely used device in micro-fluidics, the electro-osmotic pump (EOP), to create very low energy micro-scale and macro-scale mechanical actuators. The EOP uses electrical fields to move naturally occurring charged particles (ions) through a fluid medium. As the ions move in response to the applied field, they drag the (non-charged) fluid along, establishing bulk flow. When confined to a narrow chamber, a pressure gradient can be established. The combination of pressure gradient and flow performs mechanical work. With the use of electro-osmotic pumps, the invention enables actuators to be constructed in a variety of embodiments, including for example, a sheet structure, a piston structure, and a cellular structure to name a few.
(FR) L'invention exploite un dispositif beaucoup utilisé en microfluidique, la pompe électro-osmotique (EOP), pour créer des actionneurs mécaniques à l'échelle microscopique et à l'échelle macroscopique de très faible énergie. L'EOP utilise des champs électriques pour déplacer des particules chargées présentes à l'état naturel (ions) dans un milieu fluide. Alors que les ions se déplacent en réponse au champ appliqué, ils entraînent le fluide (non chargé), ce qui crée un flux de masse. Lorsqu'il est confiné dans une chambre étroite, un gradient de pression peut être créé. L'association du gradient de pression et du flux produit un travail mécanique. A l'aide de pompes électro-osmotiques, l'invention permet de construire des actionneurs sous diverses formes, notamment, par exemple, une structure de feuille, une structure de piston et une structure cellulaire pour n'en citer que quelques uns.
