An engine fuel property estimation apparatus according to the invention estimates the ignition quality (cetane number) of fuel based on torque produced after fuel injection. By variably setting the timing of the fuel injection for estimating the cetane number (cetane number estimation-purpose injection timing) according to the EGR opening degree VR, the vehicle speed SPD and the cylinder wall surface heat quantity Qc (SI 03), the influence that change in the ignition delay that is caused by a factor other than the ignition property of the fuel has the results of estimation of the cetane number is restrained.

Un appareil d'estimation des propriétés de carburant d'un moteur selon l'invention estime la qualité d'allumage (indice de cétane) du carburant sur la base du couple produit après une injection de carburant. En fixant de façon variable le calage de l'injection de carburant pour estimer l'indice de cétane (calage de l'injection pour l'estimation de l'indice de cétane), en fonction du degré d'ouverture d'EGR VR, de la vitesse du véhicule SPD et de la quantité de chaleur de la surface de paroi de cylindre Qc (S103), on réduit l'influence de changement du retard à l'allumage qui est provoquée par un facteur autre la propriété d'allumage du carburant sur les résultats d'estimation de l'indice de cétane.
