A retarder manufacturing method provided with a step in which a laminate comprising the following layers is formed: a resin layer (a) containing a resin (A) with positive intrinsic birefringence; a resin layer (b) that contains a resin (B) with negative intrinsic birefringence and is provided on one surface of the aforementioned resin layer (a); and a resin layer (c) that contains a resin (C) with positive intrinsic birefringence and is provided on the surface of the aforementioned resin layer (b) on the opposite side from the abovementioned resin layer (a). This retarder manufacturing method is also provided with the following steps: a first stretching step in which the abovementioned laminate is stretched in one direction, by a factor of at least 3, at a given temperature (T1); and a second stretching step, after the first stretching step, in which a retarder is produced by stretching the laminate in a direction substantially perpendicular to the aforementioned stretching direction at a temperature (T2) that is lower than the aforementioned temperature (T1). The third resin (C) contains a polymer (X) with positive intrinsic birefringence and cross-linked particles of a polymer (Y) with negative intrinsic birefringence.

Procédé de fabrication d'un retardateur comprenant une étape lors de laquelle est formé un stratifié comportant les couches suivantes : une couche (a) de résine contenant une résine (A) présentant une biréfringence intrinsèque positive ; un couche (b) de résine qui contient une résine (B) présentant une biréfringence intrinsèque négative et qui est située sur une surface de ladite couche (a) de résine ; et une couche (c) de résine qui contient une résine (C) présentant une biréfringence intrinsèque positive et qui est située sur la surface de ladite couche (b) de résine du côté opposé par rapport à ladite couche (a) de résine. Le présent procédé de fabrication d'un retardateur comporte également les étapes suivantes : une première étape d'étirage lors de laquelle ledit stratifié est étiré dans une direction, d'un facteur d'au moins 3, à une température donnée (T1) ; et une deuxième étape d'étirage, après la première étape d'étirage, lors de laquelle un retardateur est produit en étirant le stratifié dans une direction sensiblement perpendiculaire à ladite direction d'étirage à une température (T2) inférieure à ladite température (T1). La troisième résine (C) contient un polymère (X) présentant une biréfringence intrinsèque positive et des particules réticulées d'un polymère (Y) présentant une biréfringence intrinsèque négative.
