Title: TITANIUM ALLOY FOR USE IN GOLF-CLUB FACE
Abstract:
Provided is an alpha-beta titanium alloy, with a high Young's modulus and a good balance between strength and ductility, for use in the face of a golf club such as a driver or an iron. Said alloy is characterized by: containing, by mass, 4.7-5.5% aluminum, 0.5-1.4% iron, at most 0.03% nitrogen, and an amount of oxygen such that the [O]eq (oxygen equivalent) calculated according to formula (1) is 0.25-0.34%, with the remainder comprising titanium and impurities; and high strength and a high Young's modulus. Aluminum, oxygen, and nitrogen are added for solid-solution strengthening of the alpha phase, inexpensive iron was chosen as the beta-stabilizing element, and the amounts of said added elements are limited appropriately, resulting in both high strength and a high Young's modulus that complies with the limitation on coefficient of restitution, without relying on cold-working strengthening or an aging-strengthening heat treatment, and producing a good, high breaking elongation and a good balance between strength and ductility.
