Abstract:
An exhaust purification device for an internal combustion engine, equipped with a hydrocarbon supply valve and an exhaust purification catalyst that causes NOx and modified hydrocarbons contained in the exhaust gas to react with each other. The exhaust purification catalyst has a property whereby the NOx is reduced when the concentration of hydrocarbons flowing into the exhaust purification catalyst is oscillated with an amplitude within a predetermined range and a period within a predetermined range, and has a property whereby the amount of NOx that is adsorbed increases when the period of oscillation of the hydrocarbon concentration exceeds a predetermined range. The exhaust purification catalyst has a partition wall part that traps particulate matter. A noble metal catalyst and a basic part are arranged on a coating part formed on the surface of the partition wall part, and the oxidation capacity of the coating part of the inflow-side passage is higher than the oxidation capacity of the coating part of the outflow-side passage.
