Abstract:
(EN) A thermoplastic composition that contains a rigid renewable polyester and has a voided structure and low density is provided. To achieve such a structure, the renewable polyester is blended with a polymeric toughening additive to form a precursor material in which the toughening additive can be dispersed as discrete physical domains within a continuous matrix of the renewable polyester. The precursor material is thereafter stretched or drawn at a temperature below the glass transition temperature of the polyester (i.e., "cold drawn"). This creates a network of voids located adjacent to the discrete domains, which as a result of their proximal location, can form a bridge between the boundaries of the voids and act as internal structural "hinges" that help stabilize the network and increase its ability to dissipate energy. The present inventors have also discovered that the voids can be distributed in a substantially homogeneous fashion throughout the composition.
(FR) Cette invention concerne une composition thermoplastique qui contient un polyester renouvelable rigide caractérisé par une structure comportant des vides et une basse densité. Pour obtenir cette structure, le polyester renouvelable est mélangé avec un additif de renforcement polymère pour former un matériau précurseur, l'additif de renforcement pouvant être dispersé sous la forme de domaines physiques individuels dans une matrice continue du polymère renouvelable. Le matériau précurseur est ensuite allongé ou étiré à une température inférieure à la température de transition vitreuse du polyester (à savoir, « étiré à froid »). Ceci crée un réseau de vides dans le voisinage des domaines individuels, qui compte tenu de leur proximité, peuvent former un pont entre les limites des vides et agir comme des « charnières » structurales internes qui contribuent à stabiliser le réseau et à augmenter sa capacité à dissiper l'énergie. Les présents inventeurs ont également découvert que les vides peuvent être distribués d'une manière essentiellement homogène dans toute la composition.
