Abstract:
(EN) A melt-extruded substrate that can be readily thermorformed into a shaped, three-dimensional article is provided. The substrate is formed from a polymer composition that contains a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer and a unique aromatic amide oligomer. The present inventors have discovered that the oligomer can help increase the "low shear" complex viscosity of the resulting polymer. The ability to achieve enhanced low shear viscosity values can lead to polymer compositions with an increased melt strength, which allows the resulting substrate to better maintain its shape during thermoforming without exhibiting a substantial amount of sag. Due to its relatively high degree of melt strength, the polymer composition is particularly well suited for forming thin extruded substrates for use in thermoforming processes.
(FR) Un substrat extrudé à l'état fondu peut être facilement thermoformé en un article profilé, tridimensionnel. Le substrat est formé à partir d'une composition polymère qui renferme un polymère cristallin liquide thermotrope et un amide oligomère aromatique unique. Selon cette invention, il s'avère que l'oligomère peut faciliter l'augmentation de la viscosité complexe "à faible cisaillement" du polymère obtenu. La capacité à atteindre des valeurs accrues de viscosité à faible cisaillement peut se traduire par l'obtention de compositions polymères qui présentent une meilleure résistance à l'état fondu, ce qui permet au substrat obtenu de mieux conserver sa forme au cours du thermoformage sans présenter un affaissement important. Du fait de son degré relativement élevé de résistance à l'état fondu, la composition polymère est particulièrement bien appropriée pour former des substrats extrudés minces destinés à être utilisés dans des processus de thermoformage.
