According to exemplary embodiments, a dishwasher (10) or other washing appliance includes a siphon break apparatus (100) config- ured to substantially prevent a siphon effect in a fluid conduit config- ured to drain fluid from the dishwasher or other washing appliance. The siphon break apparatus (100) may include a body portion (102) that may be divided by a filter (118) into a filter chamber (120) and a flow chamber (122). The filter chamber (120) may extend perpen- dicularly from the flow chamber (122). An aperture (114) is defined in the filter chamber (120) and sealed shut by a domed closure (134) of a normally-closed umbrella valve (132). The domed closure (134) may unseal from the aperture (114) and thereby allow air to enter the filter chamber (120), travel through the filter (118) and into the flow cham- ber (122) so as to relieve a low pressure region and substantially pre- vent a siphon effect in the fluid conduit. A related method is also pro- vided.
