In an internal combustion engine an upstream air-fuel-ratio sensor (23), a hydrocarbon supply valve (15), an exhaust-purification catalyst (13), and a downstream air-fuel-ratio sensor (24) are arranged inside an engine-exhaust path in the stated order with respect to the upstream side. When the engine is operating, the amount of hydrocarbons injected from the hydrocarbon supply valve (15) is controlled so that the amplitude of the change in concentration of hydrocarbons flowing into the exhaust-purification catalyst (13) becomes falls within a predetermined range, on the basis of an air-fuel ratio detected by the upstream air-fuel ratio sensor (23) and the downstream air-fuel ratio sensor (24).

Dans le moteur à combustion interne de l'invention, un capteur de rapport air/carburant côté amont (23), une vanne d'alimentation en hydrocarbure (15), un catalyseur de purification de gaz d'échappement (13), et un capteur de rapport air/carburant côté aval (24) sont disposés en ordre depuis l'amont à l'intérieur d'un trajet de gaz d'échappement de moteur. Lors du fonctionnement du moteur, la quantité d'hydrocarbure injectée par la vanne d'alimentation en hydrocarbure (15) est commandée de sorte que l'amplitude de variation de masse volumique d'hydrocarbure introduit dans le catalyseur de purification de gaz d'échappement (13) correspond à une amplitude comprise dans une plage prédéfinie sur la base du rapport air/carburant détecté à l'aide du capteur de rapport air/carburant côté amont (23) et du capteur de rapport air/carburant côté aval (24).

内燃機関において、機関排気通路内に上流から順に、上流側空燃比センサ(23)、炭化水素供給弁(15)、排気浄化触媒(13)および下流側空燃比センサ(24)が配置される。機関運転時には、上流側空燃比センサ(23)および下流側空燃比センサ(24)により検出された空燃比に基づいて排気浄化触媒(13)に流入する炭化水素の濃度変化の振幅が予め定められた範囲内の振幅となるように炭化水素供給弁(15)からの炭化水素の噴射量が制御される。
