CLAIMS

1. A needle guide assembly, comprising:

a plurality of modular guide channel blocks, each guide channel block including at least one guide channel for guiding a needle; and a base for at least indirect attachment to an ultrasound probe, the base including an attachment feature for each of the plurality of guide channel blocks so as to provide a single needle guide assembly.

2. The needle guide assembly as defined in claim 1, wherein the guide channel blocks are substantially identically sized with respect to one another and are color-coded corresponding to an angle of attack for the at least one guide channel of the guide channel block.

3. The needle guide assembly as defined in claim 1, wherein the attachment features of the base each include at least one rail, each rail being uniquely angled with respect to the other rails, and wherein each guide channel block includes a track suitable for attachment to one of the rails.

4. The needle guide assembly as defined in claim 1, wherein each guide channel comprises first and second arms that arcuately extend from the base portion toward one another to define a channel, each of the arms including at least one longitudinally extending notch that enables the arm to expand and accommodate needles of differing gauges in the channel.

5. The needle guide assembly as defined in claim 4, wherein a cross section of each channel is substantially semi-circular or oval-shaped.

6. The needle guide assembly as defined in claim 1, wherein each guide channel comprises first and second arms that arcuately extend from the base portion toward one another to define a channel, each of the arms including at an inner surface adjacent the channel that defines first, second, and third contact surfaces for contact with an outer surface of a needle disposed in the guide channel.

7. A needle guide assembly attachable to an ultrasound probe, the needle guide assembly comprising:

at least one guide channel in which a needle can be temporarily disposed, the at least one guide channel for guiding a needle into a patient; and a needle stop feature that prevents distal advancement of the needle through the at least one guide channel in the absence of user assistance.

8. The needle guide assembly as defined in claim 7, wherein the needle stop feature includes a lock arm attached to the needle guide assembly that is disposed proximate a distal end of the guide channel to intercept a distal end of the needle when disposed in the guide channel.

9. The needle guide assembly as defined in claim 8, wherein the lock arm is pivotable to be selectively positioned away from the distal end of the guide channel.

10. The needle guide assembly as defined in claim 7, wherein the needle stop feature includes a membrane disposed in relation to the guide channel to prevent distal advancement of the needle until the needle penetrates the membrane via user assistance.

11. The needle guide assembly as defined in claim 7, wherein the needle stop feature comprises a distal taper of the at least one guide channel.

12. A needle guide assembly for use with an ultrasound probe, the needle guide assembly comprising:

at least one guide channel in which a needle can be temporarily disposed, the at least one guide channel for guiding a needle into a patient; and a needle stop feature that secures the needle from distal advancement through the at least one guide channel in the absence of user assistance, the needle stop feature including an arm including a support structure that engages the needle, the arm extending between the support structure and a portion of the needle guide assembly, the arm configured to initially support the needle in the absence of user assistance, the arm being adjustable via user input to enable distal advancement of the needle through the guide channel.

13. The needle guide assembly as defined in claim 12, wherein the support structure includes a collar that engages a hub portion of the needle.

14. The needle guide assembly as defined in claim 13, wherein the arm is collapsible via user input so as enable distal advancement of the needle through the guide channel.

15. The needle guide assembly as defined in claim 12, wherein the arm includes first and second portions that are slidable with respect to one another, the arm being slidable via user input to enable distal advancement of the needle through the guide channel.

16. The needle guide assembly as defined in claim 15, wherein the arm includes demarcations to assist the user in setting the needle at a desired position with respect to the guide channel.

17. A needle stop feature for use with a needle guide assembly including at least one guide channel in which a needle defining a lumen can be temporarily disposed, the at least one guide channel for guiding a needle into a patient, the needle stop feature comprising a needle engagement component that selectively engages a distal opening of the needle lumen to prevent further distal advancement of the needle through the guide channel.

18. The needle stop feature as defined in claim 17, wherein the needle engagement component includes a capture post that enters the distal opening of the needle lumen without contacting a distal tip of the needle.

19. The needle stop feature as defined in claim 17, wherein the needle engagement component includes a capture hook that enters the distal opening of the needle lumen without contacting a distal tip of the needle.

20. The needle stop feature as defined in claim 17, wherein the needle engagement component is attached to a portion of the needle guide assembly.

21. A needle guide assembly for use with an ultrasound probe, the needle guide assembly comprising:

a plurality of guide channels in each of which a needle can be temporarily disposed, the guide channels for guiding a needle into a patient; and a needle stop feature movable between a first position for blocking a distal end of each of the guide channels and a second position where the needle stop feature enables needle passage through the guide channels.

22. The needle guide assembly as defined in claim 21, wherein the needle stop feature is slidably coupled to the needle guide assembly and includes a plurality of shutters for covering the distal ends of each of the guide channels when the needle stop feature is in the first position.

23. The needle guide assembly as defined in claim 22, wherein the shutters in the first position are configured so as to engage only a portion of the needle proximal to the needle distal end when the needle is disposed in one of the guide channels so as to not blunt a distal tip of the needle.
