Navigation instructions using low-bandwidth signaling are supported in an alternative user interface that may be utilized as either a full replacement or as an enhancement to conventional visual/audio navigation interfaces. In one illustrative example, the alternative interface makes use of the more constrained, but generally broadly available low-bandwidth signaling capability of mobile devices to encode navigation instructions in the form of varying patterns of tactile vibrations that may be imparted from the device to a user as haptic feedback. The user can sense the vibrations and readily translate them into the navigation instructions without needing any kind of special decoding equipment or using any special techniques. The vibrations may be encoded using easy to remember patterns so that a full and rich navigation feature set may be accessed with minimal training on the user's part.

Selon l'invention, des instructions de navigation utilisant une signalisation à faible bande passante sont prises en charge dans une interface utilisateur différente qui peut être utilisée soit comme remplacement complet soit comme amélioration apportée à des interfaces de navigation vidéo/audio classiques. Selon un exemple illustratif, l'interface différente utilise la capacité de signalisation à faible bande passante davantage contrainte mais généralement largement disponible, de dispositifs mobiles pour coder des instructions de navigation sous la forme de séquences variables de vibrations tactiles qui peuvent être communiquées du dispositif à un utilisateur à titre de retour haptique. L'utilisateur peut ressentir les vibrations et les traduire facilement en instructions de navigation sans avoir besoin d'un quelconque type d'équipement de décodage spécial ni utiliser une quelconque technique spéciale. Les vibrations peuvent être codées à l'aide de séquences faciles à mémoriser pour qu'un ensemble de fonctions de navigation complet et riche soit accessible au moyen d'un apprentissage minimal de la part de l'utilisateur.
