A variable stiffness catheter (10) includes an elongate tubular body (12) having proximal (14) and distal (16) body ends and defining a lumen (20) extending longitudinally between a fluid inlet (22) in the proximal body end and a fluid outlet (24) in the distal body end. The catheter includes a vacuum responsive stiffener (26) coupled with the elongate tubular body, which may include a stiffening medium (30) such as an open cell foam having an expanded state and a vacuum collapsed state. The stiffening medium can transition between the expanded state at which it is relatively flexible and the vacuum collapsed state at which it is relatively inflexible via withdrawing fluid from the vacuum responsive stiffener by way of a vacuum device.

La présente invention concerne un cathéter à rigidité variable (10) comprenant un corps tubulaire allongé (12) comportant des extrémités proximale (14) et distale (16) de corps et délimitant une lumière (20) se prolongeant longitudinalement entre un orifice d'entrée de fluide (22) au niveau de l'extrémité proximale du corps et un orifice de sortie de fluide (24) au niveau de l'extrémité distale du corps. Ledit cathéter comporte un élément raidisseur réagissant au vide (26) qui est couplé au corps tubulaire allongé, ledit élément pouvant comprendre un moyen raidisseur (30) tel qu'un matériau alvéolaire à cellules ouvertes présentant un état expansé et un état contracté sous vide. Le moyen raidisseur peut passer de l'état expansé, état dans lequel il est relativement flexible, à l'état contracté sous vide dans lequel il est relativement inflexible, par aspiration du fluide présent dans l'élément raidisseur réagissant au vide sous l'effet d'un appareil à vide.
