A method to increase the molecular weight of wood mannans and xylans comprising aromatic moieties comprises the steps: a) obtaining mannan and/or xylan from wood, b) subjecting the mannan/ xylan to oxidizing conditions to convert at least a fraction of the aromatic groups into radicals and reacting said radicals with each other to obtain complexes of mannan/ xylan with increased molecular weight. The method is easy and cost efficient and enables to upgrade small wood mannans and xylans that are important in the pulp and paper industry into larger mannans and xylans and more defined structures which makes their isolation easier and application areas broader. Another advantage is that separation of mannans and xylans from mannans and xylans with bound aromatic groups is provided. The wood mannans and xylans with increased molecular weight can be used for the manufacture of barrier films in packages, for instance for oxygen, liquids and gas.

L'invention concerne un procédé pour augmenter le poids moléculaire de mannanes et de xylanes du bois comprenant des parties aromatiques qui comprend les étapes suivantes : a) obtention de mannane et/ou xylane à partir de bois, b) soumission du mannane/xylane à des conditions d'oxydation pour convertir au moins une fraction des groupes aromatiques en radicaux et réaction desdits radicaux les uns avec les autres pour obtenir des complexes de mannane/xylane avec un poids moléculaire augmenté. Le procédé est facile et rentable et permet de valoriser les petits mannanes et xylanes du bois qui sont importants dans l'industrie de la pulpe et du papier en mannanes et xylanes plus grands et en structures plus définies qui rendent leur isolement plus facile et leurs aires d'application plus larges. Un autre avantage de l'invention est la séparation des mannanes et des xylanes à partir des mannanes et xylanes avec des groupes aromatiques liés. Les mannanes et xylanes du bois avec un poids moléculaire augmenté peuvent être utilisés pour la fabrication de films barrières dans les emballages, par exemple pour l'oxygène, les liquides et les gaz.
