CLAIMS

1. A method of migrating a logical partition (LPAR), comprising:

determining a configuration of an LPAR having allocated resources residing on a computer and assigned to a first physical port of the computer, the configuration including a label that specifies a first network topology that is provided by the first physical port of the computer;

identifying a first target physical port with available capacity to service the LPAR, the first target physical port being identifed by a port label that matches the label included in the configuration of the LPAR and that specifies a second network topology that is provided by the first target physical port; and

migrating the LPAR from the first physical port to the first target physical port by reassigning the LPAR to the first target physical port.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising identifying a second target physical port with available capacity to service the LPAR, wherein the second target physical port also has a port label that matches the label included in the configuration of the LPAR.

The method of claim 2, wherein the configuration includes a sub-label that specifies a characteristic of the first physical port and the first target port has a first physical port sub-label that matches the sub-label and the second target physical port has a second physical port sub-label that does not match the sub-label.

4. The method of any of the preceding claims, further comprising receiving user input selecting the first target physical port from one or more target physical ports, each of the respective one or more target physical ports having a port label.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the one or more target physical ports are listed in an order based on the port label of each of the one or more target physical port matches at least a portion of the label included in the configuration of the LPAR.

6. The method of any of the preceding claims, wherein the configuration includes a sub-label that specifies a characteristic of the first physical port and the first target physical port has a port sub-label that matches the sub-label.

7. The method of claim 6, further comprising receiving user input specifying the sub-label for the first physical port.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein the sub-label included in the configuration for the LPAR comprises a wildcard character.

9. The method of any of the preceding claims, further comprising receiving user input selecting the first target physical port from one or more target physical ports, each of the respective one or more target physical ports having a port label.

10. The method of any of the preceding claims, further comprising automatically selecting the first target physical port from one or more target physical ports each having a respective port label based on the label included in the configuration for the LPAR and the port labels.

11. The method of any of the preceding claims, wherein the first target physical port is a physical port of a different computer than the first physical port.

12. The method of any of the preceding claims, further comprising receiving user input specifying the label included in the configuration for the LPAR.

13. The method of any of the preceding claims, wherein the computer is provided in a cloud environment.

14. A computer program product for migrating a logical partition (LPAR), the computer program product comprising:

a computer-readable storage medium having computer-readable program code embodied therewith, the computer-readable program code comprising:

computer-readable program code configured to determine a configuration of an LPAR having allocated resources residing on a computer and assigned to a first physical port of the computer, the configuration including a label that specifies a first network topology that is provided by the first physical port of the computer;

computer-readable program code configured to identify a first target physical port with available capacity to service the LPAR; and

computer-readable program code configured to migrate the LPAR from the first physical port to the target physical port by reassigning the LPAR to the first target physical port, wherein the first target physical port has a port label that matches the label included in the configuration of the LPAR and specifies a second network topology that is provided by the first target physical port.

15. The computer program product of claim 14, further comprising computer-readable program code configured to identify a second target physical port with available capacity to service the LPAR, wherein the second target physical port also has a port label that matches the label included in the configuration of the LPAR.

16. The computer program product of claim 15, wherein the configuration includes a sub-label that specifies a characteristic of the first physical port and the first target port has a first physical port sub-label that matches the sub-label and the second target physical port has a second physical port sub-label that does not match the sub-label.

17. The computer program product of claim 14, further comprising computer-readable program code configured to receiving user input selecting the first target physical port from one or more target physical ports, each of the respective one or more target physical ports having a port label.

18. The computer program product of claim 14, wherein the computer is provided in a cloud environment.

19. A system for migrating a logical partition (LPAR), comprising:

a processor; and

a memory containing hardware management console application executable by the processor and comprising:

means for determines a configuration of an LPAR having allocated resources residing on a computer and assigned to a first physical port of the computer, the

configuration including a label that specifies a first network topology that is provided by the first physical port;

means for identifying a first target physical port with available capacity to service the LPAR; and

means for migrating the LPAR from the first physical port to the target physical port by reassigning the LPAR to the first target physical port, wherein the first target physical port has a port label that matches the label included in the configuration of the LPAR and specifies a second network topology that is provided by the first target physical port.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein the configuration includes a sub-label that specifies a characteristic of the first physical port and the first target physical port has a port sub-label that matches the sub-label.

21. The system of claim 20, wherein the hardware management console further comprises means for receiving user input specifying the sub-label for the LPAR.

22. The system of claim 21, wherein the sub-label included in the configuration for the LPAR comprises a wildcard character.

23. The system of claim 20, wherein the hardware management console further comprises means for receiving user input selecting the first target physical port from one or more target physical ports, each of the respective one or more target physical ports having a port label.

24. The system of claim 20, wherein the hardware management console further comprises means for automatically selecting the first target physical port from one or more target physical ports each having a respective port label based on the label included in the configuration for the LPAR and the port labels.

25. The system of claim 20, wherein the computer is provided in a cloud environment.

26. A computer program comprising program code means adapted to perform all the steps of claims 1 to 13 when said program is run on a computer.
