A finely divided, cationic or amphoteric, aqueous polymer dispersion which is obtainable by emulsion polymerisation of ethylenically unsaturated monomers in the presence of a cationic or amphoteric protective colloid, wherein first the cationic or amphoteric protective colloid is prepared by polymerising a monomer blend in the presence of at least one first polymerisation initiator in an organic solvent, and is carried out in a pressurised reactor at a pressure of at least 1720 kPa and at a temperature of at least 150°C, which monomer blend comprises at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer carrying an amine group,, to provide a resin, then combining the resin, with an acid and water, to form the cationic or amphoteric protective colloid, thereafter carrying out an emulsion polymerisation by introducing a monomer mixture into an aqueous medium containing said cationic or amphoteric protective colloid and at least one second polymerisation initiator, wherein said monomer mixture comprises at least one ethylenically unsaturated water insoluble monomer. The composition is useful as a sizing agent for paper.

La présente invention a pour objet une dispersion de polymère aqueuse, finement divisée, cationique ou amphotère, qui peut être obtenue par la polymérisation en émulsion de monomères éthyléniquement insaturés en présence d'un colloïde protecteur cationique ou amphotère, le colloïde protecteur cationique ou amphotère étant tout d'abord préparé par la polymérisation d'un mélange de monomères en présence d'au moins un premier initiateur de polymérisation dans un solvant organique, et étant conduite dans un réacteur mis sous pression à une pression d'au moins 1 720 kPa et à une température d'au moins 150 °C, lequel mélange de monomères comprenant au moins un monomère éthyléniquement insaturé portant un groupe amine, pour fournir une résine, puis la combinaison de la résine avec un acide et de l'eau, pour former le colloïde protecteur cationique ou amphotère, puis la conduite d'une polymérisation en émulsion par l'introduction d'un mélange de monomères dans un milieu aqueux contenant ledit colloïde protecteur cationique ou amphotère et au moins un second initiateur de polymérisation, ledit mélange de monomères comprenant au moins un monomère éthyléniquement insaturé insoluble dans l'eau. La composition est utile en tant qu'agent de collage pour papier.
