Use of a scalable audio codec to implement distributed mixing and/or sender bit rate regulation in a multipoint conference is disclosed. The scalable audio codec allows the audio signal from each endpoint to be split into one or more frequency bands and for the transform coefficients within such bands to be prioritized such that usable audio may be decoded from a subset of the entire signal. The subset may be created by omitting certain frequency bands and/or by omitting certain coefficients within the frequency bands. By providing various rules for each endpoint in a conference, the endpoint can determine the importance of its signal to the conference and can select an appropriate bit rate, thereby conserving bandwidth and/or processing power throughout the conference.

L'invention concerne l'utilisation d'un codec audio hiérarchique pour mettre en œuvre un mélange distribué et/ou une régulation du débit binaire de l'expéditeur dans une conférence multipoint. Le codec audio hiérarchique permet au signal audio provenant de chaque point d'extrémité d'être scindé en une ou plusieurs bandes de fréquence et aux coefficients de transformation dans ces bandes d'être hiérarchisés de sorte que l'audio utilisable puisse être décodé à partir d'un sous-ensemble du signal entier. Le sous-ensemble peut être créé par omission de certaines bandes de fréquence et/ou par omission de certains coefficients dans les bandes de fréquence. Par fourniture de diverses règles pour chaque point d'extrémité dans une conférence, le point d'extrémité peut déterminer l'importance de son signal dans la conférence et peut sélectionner un débit binaire approprié, pour ainsi économiser la banse passante et/ou la puissance de traitement dans toute la conférence.
