A method for determining radiation exposure from chromosome abnormalities present in a specimen by determining the location or locations of the centromere of each chromosome in a cell in an image of a metaphase cell by segmentation of an accurately drawn chromosome centerline followed by selection of a longitudinal cross-section with the minimum width or intensity or width and intensity; counting the number of centromeres in each chromosome in each cell; computing the frequency of dicentric chromosomes in a population of cells; and determining the radiation dose by comparing the computed frequency of dicentric chromosomes with a previously determined dose-response curve from a calibrated source.

La méthode ci-décrite permet de déterminer l'exposition à un rayonnement à partir des anomalies chromosomiques présentes dans un spécimen. La méthode consiste à déterminer la localisation ou les localisations du centromère de chaque chromosome dans une cellule sur une image d'une cellule métaphasique par segmentation d'une ligne médiane du chromosome tracée avec précision, puis sélection d'une coupe longitudinale ayant une largeur ou une intensité ou une largeur et une intensité minimale(s); décompter le nombre de centromères dans chaque chromosome de chaque cellule; calculer la fréquence des chromosomes dicentriques dans une population de cellules; et déterminer la dose de rayonnement par comparaison de la fréquence calculée des chromosomes dicentriques et d'une courbe dose-réponse préalablement déterminée à partir d'une source étalonnée.
