With respect to an internal combustion engine that performs EGR and that controls the air-fuel ratio in response to the detected oxygen concentration in the exhaust, the electronic control unit (20) controls the engine such that the detected value for the air-fuel ratio upstream from a front catalyst (14) provided in an exhaust duct (3) reaches a value indicating a leaner air-fuel ratio when the EGR is introduced than when not introduced. Therefore, the control air-fuel ratio tracks the transition to the lean side in the window corresponding to the amount of EGR introduced, and the air-fuel ratio is controlled more precisely in response to the introduction of the EGR.

Selon l'invention, dans le cadre d'un moteur à combustion interne qui assure une recirculation des gaz d'échappement et régule le rapport du mélange air-carburant en fonction de la concentration en oxygène détectée dans l'échappement, l'unité de commande électronique (20) commande le moteur de sorte que la valeur détectée pour le rapport du mélange air-carburant en amont d'un catalyseur avant (14), disposé dans un conduit d'échappement (3), atteigne une valeur indiquant un appauvrissement accru du mélange air-carburant lorsque la recirculation des gaz d'échappement est initiée que lorsqu'elle ne l'est pas. La commande du rapport du mélange air-carburant suit de ce fait lla transition vers l'appauvrissement du mélange dans la fenêtre correspondant à la quantité de recirculation des gaz d'échappement initiée, et le rapport du mélange air-carburant est régulé plus précisément en réponse à l'initiatialisation de la recirculation des gaz d'échappement.

EGRを行うともに、排気の酸素濃度の検出結果に応じた空燃比制御を行う内燃機関において電子制御ユニット(20)は、EGRの導入時には、非導入時に比して、排気管(3)に設けられたフロント触媒(14)の上流における空燃比の検出値が、よりリーンな空燃比であることを示す値となるように機関制御を実行する。そのため、EGR量の導入に応じたウィンドウのリーン側への遷移に制御空燃比が追従されるようになり、EGRの導入状況に応じたより的確な空燃比制御が行われるようになる。
