(EN)The purpose of the present invention is to drastically improve the precision polishing properties of a cordierite sintered body having a low thermal expansion coefficient and a high rigidity (high elastic modulus), and exhibiting long-term measurement stability. In order to achieve said purpose, the cordierite sintered body contains cordierite as the main component, and 1 to 8 mass % of at least one of La, Ce, Sm, Gd, Dy, Er, Yb and Y in terms of oxides, and does not contain other crystal phases. The mass ratio of the main components of the cordierite sintered body is within the ranges of 3.85≤SiO2/MgO≤4.60 and 2.50≤Al2O3/MgO≤2.70. The average surface roughness (Ra) of the surface of the cordierite sintered body subjected to precision polishing is 1 nm or less.
