Abstract:
The present invention enables the detection of the physical topology of a network having a tree structure using a small amount of calculations and traffic. A router (10) receives response packets corresponding to the content (i.e. the relationship between the port number and MAC address) of the MAC address table at each switching hub (A, B, C, D) from each switching hub (A, B, C, D), and can detect the physical topology of a local network on the basis of the content. As such, topology detection can be completed with a relatively small amount of network communication traffic because data from a part of the content of the MAC address table at each switching hub (A, B, C, D) is sufficient information to be transmitted within the local network for topology detection in a mutual recognition phase. Furthermore, the preparation of a special communication protocol is unnecessary because the information transmitted within the local network does not exceed the like of the content corresponding to the relationship between the port number and the MAC address.
