A method of marking underwater with a plasma arc torch is provided. The method includes surrounding (Step 408) a plasma arc produced by the plasma arc torch with a flow of gas. The flow of gas may be directed around and/or along the body of the plasma arc torch with an air curtain attachment. Directing the flow of gas in this manner generates a protective air curtain which substantially surrounds the plasma arc. A current between 8 and 35 amperes may be used to mark the workpiece. Thereafter, the workpiece may be cut (Step 430) using the same plasma arc torch with a current between 30 and 750 amperes. The same nozzle and rate of flow of gas may be used for both the marking and cutting operations. Additionally, the workpiece may be kept underwater throughout the marking and cutting operations (Step 404).

L'invention porte sur un procédé de marquage sous-marin avec un chalumeau à arc de plasma. Le procédé comprend l'opération consistant à entourer d'un flux de gaz (étape 408) un arc de plasma produit par un chalumeau à arc de plasma. Le flux de gaz peut être dirigé autour et/ou le long du corps du chalumeau à arc de plasma au moyen d'un dispositif à rideau d'air. En dirigeant le flux de gaz de cette façon, un rideau d'air protecteur est généré et celui-ci entoure sensiblement l'arc de plasma. Un courant entre 8 et 35 ampères peut être utilisé pour marquer la pièce. Ensuite, la pièce peut être coupée (étape 430) à l'aide du même chalumeau à arc de plasma avec un courant compris entre 30 et 750 ampères. La même buse et le même débit de gaz peuvent être utilisés pour les opérations aussi bien de marquage que de coupe. De plus, la pièce peut rester sous l'eau pendant toute la durée des opérations de marquage et de coupe (étape 404).
