(EN)A system and method for the disinfection of liquids to potable limits have been disclosed. The system comprises a battery operated handheld device (103) characterized in that at least one ultra violet radiation generating means (105a, 105b, 105c, 105d) adapted to generate germicidal ultra violet radiations to be bombarded on the liquid stored in a container (107) without immersing the handheld device (103) inside the container (107).
