(EN)A tunable optical element and method for tuning an optical element. The optical element comprises a fluidic medium; a plurality of magnetic nanoparticles suspended in the fluidic medium; and means for tuning an effective refractive index of the optical element based on induced changes in a micro/nanoscale structure of the magnetic nanoparticles within the fluidic medium.
