CLAIMS

1. A countermeasure cartridge comprising a controller disposed within said cartridge, which is interrogated, in use, by a system external to said cartridge; wherein said controller communicates the configuration of said cartridge to said system; whereby said cartridge is automatically selected and fired if its configuration corresponds to the configuration of a misfiring cartridge.

2. A cartridge in accordance with claim 1, wherein said controller stores signals which substantially represent the manufacturer of said cartridge.

3. A cartridge in accordance with either of the preceding claims, wherein said controller stores signals which substantially represent the date of manufacture for said cartridge.

4. A cartridge in accordance with any of the preceding claims, wherein said controller stores signals which substantially represent the air carriage hours for said cartridge.

5. A cartridge in accordance with any of the preceding claims, wherein signals

communicated from said system are stored in said controller.

6. A cartridge in accordance with any of the preceding claims, wherein said controller is disposed within a squib and said squib is disposed at or adjacent one end of said cartridge.

7. A cartridge in accordance with any of the preceding claims, wherein said interrogation of said controller is performed by utilising voltage and current levels below the voltage and current levels required for initiating said squib.

8. A cartridge in accordance with claim 6, wherein the interface between said squib and said system is via a two or more pin connector.

9. A cartridge in accordance with any of the preceding claims, wherein said cartridge is compatible for use with a system in which the controller is not interrogated.

10. A system for identifying the configuration of a countermeasure cartridge within its inventory comprising:

• means of communication between a countermeasure cartridge and an external system;

• means of storing signals within said cartridge which substantially represent the configuration of said cartridge;

• means of identifying the configuration of said cartridge within the inventory of the system;

• Means of interfacing said cartridge to said system; and

• means for automatically selecting and firing the next countermeasure cartridge of the correct configuration in the event of said cartridge misfiring.

1 1. A system in accordance with claim 10, further comprising means of communicating signals from said system to said cartridge.

12. A system in accordance with either claims 10 or 1 1, wherein said means of storing signals stores signals which represent the manufacturer of said cartridge.

13. A system in accordance with any of claims 10 to 12, wherein said means of storing signals stores signals which represent the date of manufacture of said cartridge.

14. A system in accordance with any of claims 10 to 13, wherein said means of storing signals stores signals which represent the air carriage hours of said cartridge.

15. A system in accordance with any of claims 10 to 14, further comprising a controller, wherein signals communicated from said system are stored in said controller

16. A system in accordance with claim 15, wherein said controller is disposed within a Squib and said Squib is disposed at or adjacent one end of said cartridge.

17. A system in accordance with any of claims 10 to 16, wherein said communication between said countermeasure cartridge and said external system is performed by utilising voltage and current levels below the voltage and current levels required for initiating said Squib.

18. A system in accordance with claim 16, wherein the interface between said Squib and said system is via a two or more pin connector.

19. A system in accordance with any of claims 10 to 18, wherein said cartridge is compatible for use with a system in which the controller is not interrogated.

20. A method of dispensing a countermeasure cartridge comprising the steps of:

• communicating signals between said cartridge and a system external to said cartridge;

• storing signals within said cartridge which substantially represent the

configuration of said cartridge;

• determining the type of said cartridge;

• interfacing said cartridge to said system;

• interrogating said cartridge to determine the configuration of cartridge; and

• automatically selecting and firing the next counter measure cartridge of the correct configuration in the event of said cartridge misfiring.

21. A method in accordance with claim 20, further comprising the step of communicating signals from said system to said cartridge.

22. A Countermeasure cartridge substantially as hereinbefore described and/or illustrated in any of the accompanying text and Figure 7.

23. A system for identifying the configuration of a Countermeasure cartridge as hereinbefore described and/or illustrated in any of the accompanying text and/or figure 7.

24. A method of dispensing a Countermeasure cartridge as hereinbefore described and/or illustrated in any of the accompanying text and/or figure 7.
